Nighthawk
Jul 28, 2017
Can you guess what type of bird this is?
Nope, not a wren!
This is a Nighthawk and he’s new to the neighborhood. He has been roosting on the same branch in my mesquite tree during the day for the last few weeks.
A few facts about the Nighthawk:
- Nighthawks are medium-sized birds with long pointed wings, short legs, and very short bills.
- Their soft plumage is camouflage (grey-black-brown-white), colored to resemble bark or leaves. As you can see from my photo, very difficult to spot with the naked eye during the day.
- A Nighthawk is a nocturnal bird, most active in the late evening and early morning.
- They catch flying insects on the wing; feeding on moths and other large flying insects.
- They usually nest on the ground; the female laying two patterned eggs directly onto bare ground.- there is no nest.
- Nighthawks are migrants, retreating south during the winter months.
